A new reason for the rise in food prices

A record increase in fertilizer prices over the past 10 years was called the new reason for the rise in food prices, Bloomberg reports.

According to an analyst at VTB, Elena Sakhanova, the price of three main groups of fertilizers – potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen – are at a record level over the past 10 years, which seriously affects global food inflation.

Corn will be hit hardest by price increases. Fertilizers account for about 20 percent of the cost of growing it. A poor corn harvest will translate into higher feed costs, which will ultimately lead to higher meat prices. Juices and sodas can also rise in price as corn is their main ingredient. Corn planted in 2022 is expected to decline to 36.8 million hectares from the current 37.8 million.

One of the factors behind the rise in fertilizer prices is unfavorable weather conditions. Persistent storms in the late summer of 2021 on the US Gulf Coast discouraged imports and exports of products. It also temporarily closed factories in the region, including the world’s largest nitrogen complex, owned by CF Industries Holdings. At the same time, due to gas prices, the company was forced to close two factories in the UK. One of the world’s largest fertilizer suppliers, Yara International ASA, also said high natural gas prices would force it to cut about 40 percent of its ammonia production in Europe.

In addition, transportation becomes more expensive. Freight is about 15 percent of the purchase price, according to a senior executive at Quest Products, which helps bring new products to market, including pesticides and fertilizers. Political measures are also affecting the rise in prices. Thus, the United States and Europe have imposed sanctions against a large fertilizer producer Belaruskali.

World food prices have peaked in 60 years. They grew by 33 percent in August 2021. The reasons are record droughts, labor shortages, and supply chain problems.
