EU approves alternative protein source

The European Commission has approved a third type of insect that can be used as a food ingredient. Now domestic crickets in the EU can be sold in frozen and dried form.

The safety of the product has been confirmed by the European Food Safety Authority (ESFA).

The first insect species officially approved for human consumption in the EU in July 2021 was the larvae of a large mealworm, and in November of the same year, Asian locust was added to the list of permitted food ingredients. ESFA has more than 10 applications pending, including beetles, grasshoppers and cicadas.

The EC believes that the use of insects, which are eaten by millions of people around the world, as an alternative source of protein will contribute to the EU’s transition to a more sustainable food system.
