Beneath a melted glacier in Switzerland

An ancient mountain trail has opened up under a melted glacier in Switzerland. According to experts, the path laid in the mountains has been under snow and ice for more than two thousand years. On the pass between the top of the Sex Rouge and the glacier Zenfleuron, bare land is now visible. According to representatives of the neighboring resort Glacier 3000, by the end of September there will be only a lake of melt water, writes Euronews.

Ten years ago, the thickness of the ice layer in this place approached 15 meters, and tourists could slide on the top of Sex Rouge on skis. According to scientists from the University of Bern, the pass has been hidden under ice since at least the ancient Roman era. They note that this season the glaciers will melt three times faster than the average over the past decade.

Previously, «Context» reported that this year, due to a little snowy winter and an abnormally hot summer, glaciers in the Alps are melting at a record speed in 60 years. Because of this, the border between Italy and Switzerland shifted in places.
