Anniversary of the Shanghai Communiqué

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke at a video conference dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Shanghai Communiqué between China and the United States. Main theses:

History teaches us that if we persistently seek common ground while maintaining differences, we can achieve peaceful coexistence between countries with different social systems.

China respects the American social system and never bets that the US will lose. He hopes that the US will continue to be open and confident and support development and progress. Similarly, the United States must respect China’s development path.

China is willing to work with the United States to take full advantage of each other, expand pragmatic cooperation in trade, economic, investment, energy, infrastructure and other fields, and constantly expand the scope of cooperation between the two countries.

Global challenges require global cooperation, and both China and the United States must assume the role of a big country. We are open to the participation of the United States in the Belt and Road Initiative and we are ready to consider coordinating with the US Restoring a Better World Initiative.

China has not sought any kind of hegemony in the past, now or in the future, and the United States must do the same.

The peoples of China and the United States are great nations. Now that the world has emerged from the Cold War, the iron curtain must no longer fall.

Standing at a new historical starting point, we must strive to find the right path for China and the United States to get along with each other in a new situation of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, seeking to benefit both countries and the world. This is the responsibility of China and the United States!
