Denmark and Canada share a disputed island in the Arctic Ocean almost 50 years later. The countries have reached an agreement, according to which a border will be drawn along the island of Hans with an area of 1.3 square kilometers, the Globe and Mail newspaper writes, citing sources.
The border is planned to divide the island between the Canadian territory of Nunavut and the semi-autonomous Danish territory of Greenland. Officially, the division agreement may be signed as early as mid-June.
The dispute over the island began in 1973, when an agreement was being developed between Canada and Greenland on the delimitation of the continental shelf. Then the parties came to the conclusion that acute cannot be considered a maritime territory, and a decision on it must be made separately, but they did not come to a formal agreement.
