Deputies of the European Parliament and the governments of the EU countries agreed to reform the Emissions Trading System (ETS), which has been operating in the European Union since 2005, writes DW.
By 2030, emissions in the sectors covered by the ETS should be reduced by 62% compared to 2005, one percentage point more than the Commission has proposed.
Emissions allowances will be reduced at the EU level at the same time. In addition, by 2025, the European Commission must assess the risks associated with EU products exported to third countries, the production of which releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Also, according to the plan, the phase-out of free quotas for enterprises will continue over an eight-year period. In 2026, the number of such quotas will be reduced by 2.5%, and by 2034 they are planned to be completely abandoned.
