Number of residence permits issued in the EU

In 2021, the EU issued 2,952,300 primary residence permits to non-EU citizens. This number increased by 31% compared to 2020, reaching the level seen in 2019, according to Eurostat.

The number of primary residence permits issued for employment became a record — they amounted to 45% of the total. Poland has the highest number of such permits. And France has issued the largest number of residence permits related to education. Most permits issued for family reasons were provided by Spain, Italy and France.
