Five million citizens have left Russia in 20 years

The total emigration from Russia for the period from 2000 to 2020 ranged from 4 to 5 million people. We are talking only about the citizens of the Russian Federation. These are the results of a study conducted in August 2021 by the Takie Dela portal together with a team of independent experts.

About half left for the CIS countries, half – for non-CIS countries. In the early 2000s, for the most part, they left “to the west”. Since 2014, more people are leaving for the CIS.

Least of all left in the period from 2006 to 2011. In recent years, the country has been losing 300 thousand citizens annually. Most likely, this can be considered the most conservative estimate.

The authors of the study relied on data from Rosstat, host states, and also interviewed 900 people who left Russia from 2000 to 2021. The link to the survey was disseminated through Russian-speaking “emigrant” groups on social networks. As a result, the sample practically did not include emigration to the CIS countries, where there are many Russians historically and people do not unite in social networks on a national or linguistic basis.
