Bulgaria withdraws «golden passports» after the scandal with the illegal issuance of documents. Over the past three months, the country has already canceled the investment citizenship of 12 people, with regard to another five, the consideration procedure is ongoing, Minister of Justice Krum Zarkov told the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency.
Zarkov specified that in total Bulgaria issued more than 120 passports in exchange for investments. It is currently unknown which specific investors are involved. It is noted that in all cases the deprivation of citizenship was justified by the fact that the investments that were made to obtain it turned out to be non-existent. Currently, the Bulgarian National Security Agency checks each of the issued passports.
The verification began after an anonymous complaint was received by one of the parties at the beginning of the year that third-country nationals had obtained Bulgarian citizenship and residence permits illegally. At the same time, the practice of granting citizenship in exchange for investments was criticized by the European Commission.
