How society is changing attitudes towards work

Very good statistics illustrating how generations and their attitude to work are changing — in the USA, but most likely something similar is happening around the world, just with a different speed and scale.

65% of respondents aged 18 to 29 believe that workers should only do the work they are paid for (= which is part of their «job duties») and nothing more. The share of those who agree with this statement drops rapidly with increasing age to 28% in the 65+ cohort. The proportion of those who believe that an employee should always do something outside of their duties, on the contrary, grows with age: from 50% in the 18-29 cohort to 82% in the 65+ cohort (yes, we also noticed that there are people who agree with both — opposite — positions, but it happens that too)

Young people are increasingly inclined towards quiet quitting (quiet leaving / dismissal) — a strategy when an employee does not quit, but simply does nothing more than the mandatory minimum.

Biologists have found that ferns have been stealing DNA from other organisms for millions of years. In total, the fern genome has more than 7 billion bases in 39 chromosomes — this is twice as many as in humans. It turned out that for many years ferns not only accumulated DNA, but also borrowed it from other organisms. The plant’s genome has a defense against a toxin that punches holes in the cell membrane. Bacteria have such protection, and scientists have suggested that the fern received it from them during horizontal gene transfer.
