A British court has approved the extradition of Julian Assange to the United States. The extradition order for the founder of WikiLeaks has yet to be approved by Home Secretary Priti Patel. And the defense side can challenge the decision in the High Court, writes Sky News.
US Attorney’s Office has charged Assange, 50, with espionage and disclosure of classified information related to defense. In particular, according to law enforcers, the journalist published thousands of secret military documents in 2010 and 2011. Assange’s maximum prison term is 175 years.
In December 2021, the London High Court upheld an appeal filed by US authorities and overturned the ban on Assange’s extradition to the United States.
Then human rights activists sharply criticized the decision of the court. And today, opponents of Assange’s extradition gathered in front of the Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London, arranging a rally in his support.
