Middle class in Europe

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, together with Bertelsmann Stiftung, analyzed data from 1995 to 2018.

The researchers concluded that over the years, access to the middle class in Germany has become much more difficult.

In this country, the middle class stratum has shrunk faster since the mid-90s than in most other countries studied. Only in Sweden, Finland and Luxembourg this process went even faster.

According to the study, the middle class is most widely represented in Slovakia (71%). In Norway, the Czech Republic and Finland, its representatives are 70%. In Germany — 64%. And the narrowest stratum of the middle class among European countries is observed in Lithuania (53%).
