Nasdaq had the worst start to the year

The Nasdaq Composite Index posted its worst start to the year in more than a decade, losing $2.2 trillion in market value.

The index has fallen 8.3% since the start of the year and is on track for its worst January performance since 2008, when the global financial crisis rocked equity markets around the world. The latest drop comes amid a sharp rise in US Treasury yields, which has made expensive stocks less attractive.

Fast-growing tech stocks make up more than half of Nasdaq’s 3,600-plus stock, and they’ve been on the decline.

A January survey of global fund managers by Bank of America Corp. showed that investment in the technology sector fell 20% in a month to its lowest level since 2008, writes Bloomberg.

American scientists from Cambridge have developed an «artificial pancreas» for children with type 1 diabetes. The technology «independently» monitors the level of insulin in children from 1 to 7 years old and even learns to predict it.

Then, an automated blood glucose meter with a pump, connected to the CamAPS FX app, regulates the amount of insulin released into the body and replenishes the deficiency when necessary. Thus, parents of a child with CamAPS FX do not need to be afraid of nighttime episodes of hypoglycemia.

Salzburg University professor Manuel Shabus and his colleagues from Austria and Switzerland observed the brain activity of 17 volunteers for two nights. Recordings were played to them, in which familiar and unfamiliar voices addressed the sleeping people by name.

An EEG showed that brain activity during non-REM sleep increases at the sound of an unfamiliar voice. Moreover, as you listen to the recordings, the activity decreases. The latter perhaps demonstrates that our brain retains the ability to receive and analyze new information even during deep sleep.

A scientific team from the Southwestern Research Institute in Texas have reported that there is a liquid ocean under the ice of Saturn’s moon Mimas. Previously, scientists believed that the satellite consists entirely of frozen water.

Ice moon geophysicist and lead author of the study, Dr. Alyssa Rhodes, said the surface of the moon does not betray the presence of an ocean underneath. She says it could be classified as a new type of ocean world.

This discovery will help to better understand the nature of the rings of Saturn and its satellites, as well as in the search for potentially habitable sea satellites, for example, around Uranus.
