Number of endangered species

The International Union for Conservation of Nature has published the third update of the lists this year. The number of species that received conservation status was 142,577, of which 40,084 are under threat of extinction.

The main focus of this update is on the inhabitants of freshwater ecosystems. In particular, experts have calculated that of the approximately 6,000 species of dragonflies, sixteen percent are threatened. And the Pyrenean desman received the status of an endangered species.

In addition, the statuses of many bird species have been updated: for example, the small falcon, the red-footed falcon, has become a vulnerable species, one step closer to extinction.

Since 1960, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) has maintained a list that contains information on the situation of tens of thousands of representatives of flora and fauna.
