Number of unprofitable companies in Russia

Employees of the Center for Market Research at the Higher School of Economics have counted the number of zombie companies in the Russian industry. Excerpts from the study are cited by Vedomosti.

The authors classified unprofitable, ineffective enterprises on the brink of bankruptcy and producing products that are not competitive in their market to the category of “zombie” companies. The researchers made their calculations based on a survey of heads of large and medium-sized industrial companies from 82 regions.

The share of such companies in the domestic industry is 10-15 percent. In the manufacturing industry this figure is 15 percent, in construction and trade it is kept at 17-18 percent.

“As a rule, such economic agents, working even with negative added value, are concentrated in small and single-industry towns and are financed, among other things, by the paternalism of local authorities,” the study says.

At the same time, a representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in a conversation with the publication, called the assessment effective, but noted that a significant share of such companies is not deliberately liquidated by the state, despite the lack of production, since it is more expedient to keep them “as a legal entity and a property complex”.
