Portugal is suffering from severe drought

Portugal’s National Meteorological Agency said 91% of the country is suffering from «severe» or «extreme» drought conditions. According to him, the amount of precipitation from February 1 to February 15 was only 7% of the average.

The Portuguese government is already limiting the use of reservoirs for hydroelectric power generation to conserve water. The drought has also affected the farms: farmers are asking for financial assistance due to the lack of grass for livestock, writes Independent.

In addition, according to the Institute for the Protection of Nature and Forests of Portugal, more than 5.5 thousand hectares have burned in rural areas since the beginning of the year. This is the largest burnout area in the last 22 years.

For the rest of the month, the drought will only intensify. Meteorologists predict that there will be no rain until the end of February. In addition, they estimate that by the end of the century in Portugal, the average annual rainfall will decrease by 20-40%.
