Rolex SA will begin issuing certificates of authenticity to authorized dealers selling pre-owned watches, giving the Swiss company more control over its products and shaking up the $20 billion pre-owned luxury watch market. The pre-owned luxury watch market is predicted to grow to $35 billion by 2030. Rolex watches account for the largest share of used watch sales.
Bucherer’s Swiss dealer will be the first to sell pre-owned Rolex watches certified as authentic by the company in stores across Europe. Other authorized Rolex dealers will be able to start participating in the program in spring 2023. Rolex has said it will only certify watches that are at least three years old.
Rolex is the largest Swiss watch brand, producing about 1 million watches a year with annual sales of about 8 billion Swiss francs ($8.5 billion) and a market share close to 29%, writes Bloomberg.
