Spain switches to a shorter working week

The Ministry of Industry has prepared a procedure for the transition to a shorter working week for 150 companies. The cost of the experiment: $10 million (about 9.55 million euros), which will go to subsidies for small and medium-sized companies, writes the newspaper El País.

The purpose of the experiment is to test whether a reduction in working hours while maintaining the same wage is affordable for companies and whether such conditions reduce their productivity or profits. Examples of successful implementation already exist: Software Delsol switched to a 36-hour work week in January 2020 and increased its turnover by 20% in a year.

Opponents of the idea believe that the transition to a four-day worker increases the stress level of the employee, since he is required to perform the same performance in less time.

Spaniards currently work, on average, over 1,500 hours a year, 200 hours more than the Germans and the British.
