The number of wealthy people in Russia

The number of wealthy families in Russia has decreased by 40 percent. In the first quarter of 2021, about a million families had high income, up from 1.7 million a year earlier. Such data are presented in the study of the audit and consulting network FinExpertiza, which is at the disposal of Lenta.ru.

The company based its findings on data from the Rosstat survey. Families are considered wealthy if they have enough money to buy everything they need. And if in the first quarter of 2020 3.1 percent of families answered this way, then in a year – 1.9 percent.

FinExpertiza Global President Elena Trubnikova admitted that obviously not all families want to talk about their prosperity, but even with this assumption, it is clear that there are still a small number of well-to-do families in Russia, and even they are getting poorer. According to her, the dynamics of income is such that it casts doubt on the possibility of the formation of a middle class.

In the context of regions, the number of well-to-do families decreased in 37 constituent entities of the federation, and increased in 32. In 16 of them, neither in 2020 nor in 2021 there was a statistically significant number of families that would claim complete financial well-being.

The worst dynamics in absolute terms is in Moscow – over the year the number of wealthy households decreased by 356.4 thousand (minus 72.6 percent). This is followed by Dagestan (minus 93.9 thousand families, 88 percent), Belgorod region (minus 48 thousand, 91.4 percent), Tatarstan (minus 46.9 thousand, 81.1 percent) and Rostov region (minus 36.6 thousand , 100 percent).

As for the rest of the categories of Russians, half of families (49 percent) say that there is sufficient funds only for food and clothing. Another 36 percent add durable goods to them, but not a car, apartment or summer cottage.

Every eighth Russian family (12.9 percent) admits that they only have enough money for food, and it is already difficult to buy clothes and pay utility bills. The poorest households (0.2 percent) do not even have enough money to buy food.

Earlier, the Ministry of Labor said that the highest level of poverty in Russia was recorded in Tuva, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
