The prevalence of slavery in the world

According to the Global Slavery Index, around 40 million people worldwide are enslaved in one form or another.

In relative numbers, the undisputed leader of this sad rating is North Korea: about 10.5% of the inhabitants of this country are classified as slaves. In Eritrea, slaves are 9.3% of the total population, in Burundi — 4%. Further, the numbers are reduced to 2%, and here mainly countries in Africa and the Middle East

But in absolute numbers India is in the lead: about 8 million inhabitants of this country are in slavery. Almost 4 million slaves were counted in China, about 3 in Pakistan.

In Eastern Europe, according to the calculations of the compilers of the rating, slaves: 0.3 — 0.5% of the total population

In Western Europe, this indicator is most often at the level of 0.2%, and the least number of slaves was in Canada: 0.048% of the total population of the country
