Typical breakfasts have risen at a record price

The «Typical Breakfast Index», traditionally calculated by the Financial Times, has grown at a record over the past ten years, the newspaper writes.

The reason was a sharp rise in the price of ingredients included in the «typical breakfast» due to bad weather, crop failure of some crops and disruptions in supply chains.

The main ingredients of a typical breakfast and the ingredients they are made from are coffee, milk, sugar, oats, wheat and orange juice. Over the past two years, their futures contracts have risen in price by an average of 63 percent.

Large food companies such as Nestle and Procter & Gamble are reacting to market conditions and raising prices for their products, shifting the rise in prices for raw materials onto buyers.

At the same time, analysts interviewed by the publication predict that the trend will continue. According to them, the cost of basic foodstuffs will continue to rise for at least the next year.
