USA to build SMR in Romania

A cooperation agreement between the American manufacturer of modular reactors (SMR) NuScale Power and the Romanian nuclear power company Nuclearelectrica will be signed shortly, Euractiv writes.

The trade agreement will include the installation of 12 modules and will create 6,000 jobs in the United States and Romania, and if the project expands, this figure will rise to 30,000.

Two more European countries are planning to build nuclear power plants of the new generation. The UK, which will use domestic developments, wants to commission the first capacities by 2029. At the same time, Poland plans to launch the SMR-rector.

To date, there is not a single SMR commissioned. But China began construction of the first land-based small modular nuclear reactor this summer. And the United States is preparing to begin commercial operation of such a nuclear power plant in Idaho in 2029.

China called the US report on its military power «justifying the Chinese threat theory.» Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said:

The recently released Pentagon report on China’s military power and nuclear arsenal should be considered «manipulation» to justify the «Chinese threat» theory.

The American side in this report is trying to manipulate [the facts] in connection with the so-called theory of the Chinese threat. This document is a complete falsification.

The United States in the report is completely disregard for facts and is guided by prejudice.

In fact, the biggest source of danger for the whole world is the United States itself.

Beijing maintains a non-offensive defense strategy and maintains the «smallest possible nuclear arsenal» necessary to ensure international security.
