Vienna to reduce your carbon footprint

Over the next two years, Vienna will allocate 2.8 billion euros to reduce its carbon footprint. The mayor of the Austrian capital, Michael Ludwig, presented a plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.

It involves the abandonment of heating with gas and fuel oil, the transfer of central heating to heat pumps, geothermal sources, as well as heat from industrial production and waste incineration plants.

By 2030, it is planned to process 60% of all urban waste, by 2050 — 100%. By 2040, all public and municipal transport must be electric. Passage of cars with internal combustion engines on city streets will be prohibited.

To switch to renewable energy sources, it is planned to build solar panels every year, covering up to a hundred football fields. Getting permission to build a private power plant will become easier.

Vienna also wants to become a «city of short distances», a place where any infrastructure is reachable in 15 minutes on foot, by bike or transport.
